New Jersey became a state in 1787. It was the third state to ratify the United States Constitution. New Jersey played a crucial part in the birth of this country, as more than one hundred battles were fought there during the Revolutionary War.

The ornament features "Washington Crossing the Delaware," painted in 1851 by Emanuel Leutze to commemorate George Washington's Christmas-night crossing of the Delaware River in 1776, a maneuver that led to the pivotal American victory at the Battle of Trenton.
New Jersey's Revolutionary history runs deep: Mary Ludwig Hays, later known as Molly Pitcher, took her husband's place at a cannon during the Battle of Monmouth after he was wounded. Nearly a century later, Thomas Edison built his famous laboratory at Menlo Park, where he invented the electric light bulb in 1878. [Read more in the included brochure]
