The Silver Plate Under the Capitol: September 18, 1793

On September 18, 1793, Washington marched from President’s Square to Jenkins Hill and laid the Capitol’s silver-plated cornerstone. The plate named James Hoban, who was building the President’s House the same year.

The Morning the Star-Spangled Banner Began: September 14, 1814

At dawn on September 14, 1814, Fort McHenry raised Mary Pickersgill's giant garrison flag. Francis Scott Key saw it still flying after the British bombardment and wrote the verses we know as the Star-Spangled Banner.

On the evening of September 11, 2001, President Bush addressed the nation from the Oval Office. Congress later named the date Patriot Day. The flag still flies half-staff over the White House.
